Red Light Therapy Benefits: What the Research Shows (2026 Guide)
Share
Smoother-looking skin, faster recovery after training, calmer evenings. Red light therapy has quietly moved from dermatology clinics and sports labs into the routines of people who want to look and feel their best. Here is what it can do for you, the research behind it, and how to bring it home in just minutes a day.
Light that gives your cells more energy.
Red light therapy, known in research as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. No UV, no heat, no downtime.
Inside every cell, the mitochondria absorb this light and respond by producing more ATP, the energy your cells run on, while supporting circulation and the body's natural repair processes.1 Red light works mostly in the skin. Near-infrared travels deeper, toward muscles and joints. More energy at cell level is what makes everything else possible.
The story even goes back to space: in the late 1990s, NASA-funded researchers explored LEDs to support cell growth and tissue repair for astronauts.2 Today the same principle fits in your living room.
Benefit 01 ยท Skin
Smoother, firmer-looking skin, from within.
Red light is the most studied wavelength in skincare for one reason: it supports collagen, the protein that keeps skin plump, smooth and firm. Instead of working only on the surface like a cream, it works where collagen is made. In a climate like the UAE, where the sun is strong all year, that makes it a natural partner to your SPF.
- 31.6%less wrinkle volume around the eyes with 660nm red light, in a trial of 137 women aged 40 to 65.5Randomised controlled trial, 2023
- Up to 36%fewer wrinkles and up to 19% more elasticity with red and near-infrared LEDs.4Double-blind split-face trial, 2007
- 136volunteers saw smoother skin texture and higher measured collagen density after 30 sessions.3Controlled trial, 2014
Blue and red light, the power duo for blemishes.
Blue light works at the surface, where blemish-causing bacteria live. Red light calms and supports the skin underneath. Used together, they are one of the most popular non-invasive options for blemish-prone skin, with no harsh products and no drying out.
- 76%improvement in inflammatory blemishes after 12 weeks of combined blue (415nm) and red (660nm) light, ahead of a classic benzoyl peroxide cream in the same study.6British Journal of Dermatology, 2000
- ~45%improvement in inflammatory blemishes with at-home LED devices across 6 studies, with red plus blue performing best.7JAMA Dermatology meta-analysis, 2025

Near-infrared light reaches deep into muscle tissue, which is why it has become a favourite in sports science and among athletes. Before training for performance, after training for recovery. Whether you play padel, lift or run along the Dubai marina, it fits naturally into your routine.
Benefit 04 ยท Joint comfort
Move freely, feel lighter.
Joint and neck discomfort is where some of the most impressive research on near-infrared light has been done, with large reviews published in leading medical journals. For anyone who trains often, sits at a desk all day or simply wants to keep moving with ease, it is one of the most compelling reasons to try red light.
- 1,063participants across 22 placebo-controlled trials: less knee pain and better function, with benefits lasting weeks after the sessions ended.10BMJ Open meta-analysis, 2019
- 22 weeksLess neck pain for up to 22 weeks after the sessions ended in chronic cases, across 16 trials.11The Lancet meta-analysis, 2009
Lumnae panels include a dedicated Joint Pain program and a Muscle Recovery program, so you never have to guess the settings.
Benefit 05 ยท SleepYour new evening ritual.
Late nights, bright screens, air-conditioned days indoors: modern life in the UAE keeps the brain switched on. Red light is the colour of sunset, the signal your body naturally associates with winding down, and it carries none of the blue light that keeps you awake.
- +75%melatonin levels in athletes after 14 nights of 30-minute red light sessions (from 22 to 39 pg/mL), with better sleep quality scores, while the placebo group barely changed.12Journal of Athletic Training, 2012
The Sleep program on Lumnae panels turns this into a simple evening habit.
Benefit 06 ยท BodyA boost for your body goals.
Red light will never replace training and good nutrition, but it can be a powerful ally alongside them.
- โ3.5 incombined from waist, hips and thighs after just 2 weeks of red light sessions, versus โ0.7 inch in the placebo group.13Randomised controlled trial, 67 volunteers, 2009
Lumnae panels include a Fat Loss program designed to complement your training.

Red light research keeps expanding. A few areas that are getting a lot of attention:
Hair density
Women using 655nm red light saw a 48% increase in hair count over 16 weeks, versus 11% with a sham device.14 A review of 7 trials confirmed the trend.15
Focus
One session of near-infrared light on the forehead improved reaction time and memory in healthy adults compared with placebo.16
Monthly comfort
A 2025 review of 9 trials and 645 women found that red light significantly eased period discomfort compared with sham.17

Is red light therapy safe?
In 2025, 21 international experts published a consensus in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology confirming that photobiomodulation is a safe modality for adults, and that red light does not damage DNA.18 Unlike UV, it does not tan or burn.
Good to know: start on clean, dry skin and follow the session times in your user guide. If you take photosensitising medication or are pregnant, check with your doctor first.

FAQs
How often should I use red light therapy?
Three to five sessions a week is the sweet spot for most people. With the LED mask, a session lasts 10 minutes. With a panel, start with 5-minute sessions in the first week, then follow the program for your goal.
How soon will I see results?
Consistency is everything. Many people notice a fresher glow within the first weeks, while firmness and fine lines keep improving over 8 to 12 weeks of regular use.
Is red light therapy safe?
Yes. A 2025 consensus of 21 experts in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology confirmed it is safe for adults and that red light does not damage DNA. Check with your doctor first if you take photosensitising medication or are pregnant.
What is the difference between red and near-infrared light?
Red light works mostly in the skin, for collagen and glow. Near-infrared goes deeper, toward muscles and joints, for recovery and comfort. Lumnae panels combine both, with 9 wavelengths in total.
Can I use it with my skincare?
Absolutely. Use the light on clean, dry skin, then apply your serums and creams right after your session.
Mask or panel: which one should I choose?
The mask is made for your face, with blue light for blemish-prone skin. A panel covers larger areas for recovery, sleep and full-body routines. Many of our clients start with one and add the other later.
