The Science

How light heals skin — and why wavelength is everything

Your Lumnae mask is not a light — it is a precision instrument. Each wavelength travels to a specific depth in your skin and triggers a specific biological response. This is not cosmetic marketing: it is photobiomodulation — a well-documented science used in clinical dermatology, sports medicine and wound healing worldwide.

The key insight: different wavelengths do different things. Blue light cannot do what red light does. Near-infrared reaches places yellow light cannot. This is why the Lumnae mask has 4 distinct wavelengths — and why each mode combines them deliberately.

415nm Blue Light

Targets porphyrins in acne-causing bacteria (C. acnes), destroying them at the surface. The most clinically validated wavelength for inflammatory acne. Does not penetrate beyond the epidermis — which is exactly what you need for surface bacteria.

590nm Yellow Light

Inhibits melanin production (tyrosinase suppression), boosts lymphatic drainage and calms vascular redness. The dedicated pigmentation wavelength — and the most underrated in LED therapy. Research confirms it reduces VEGF and SCF, the vascular signals that drive melasma and persistent dark spots.

Active in M2 Rejuvenation · M4 Morning · M6 Bedtime
660nm Red Light

Peak absorption by Cytochrome C Oxidase — the cell's primary energy enzyme. Boosts collagen and elastin synthesis, reduces inflammation, strengthens the skin barrier. The most researched wavelength in photobiomodulation science. Penetrates 5–10mm into the dermis where collagen-producing fibroblasts live.

Active in M1 · M2 · M3 · M4 · M6
850nm Near-Infrared

Invisible to the eye, but the deepest-penetrating wavelength in the mask — reaching 20–30mm. Stimulates tissue repair, reduces deep inflammation, improves microcirculation and speeds recovery from any skin procedure. Essential for firmness and overall skin health — works where red light cannot reach.

Why you cannot see half the LEDs working

850nm near-infrared is invisible to the human eye. If you run M3 (Anti-Aging) or M4 (Morning Skincare), approximately half the LEDs appear dim or off — but they are operating at full power. Hold your phone camera up to the mask: your camera sensor detects NIR and will show those LEDs glowing. This is normal and expected.

The 6 Modes

Which mode does what — and when to use it

Each mode is a calibrated combination of wavelengths at a specific irradiance. Think of them as six different tools — not six versions of the same thing. Here is exactly what each one targets:

M1
Repairing 660nm Red only

The recovery mode. Pure red light reduces inflammation, rebuilds the skin barrier and accelerates healing. The gentlest mode — ideal for sensitive skin, first-time users or days when your skin feels reactive.

Use for: post-procedure recovery · rosacea flare days · sensitive or reactive skin · starting out
Irradiance: 22 mW/cm² Energy: 13.2 J/cm² Duration: 10 min
M2
Rejuvenation 590nm Yellow + 660nm Red

The brightening and pigmentation mode. Yellow at 590nm inhibits melanin production at the cellular level while red at 660nm reduces the inflammation that triggers dark marks. The most targeted mode for UAE skin concerns: dark spots, uneven tone, post-acne marks and dullness.

Use for: dark spots · hyperpigmentation · melasma · rosacea · dull skin · acne marks
Irradiance: 30 mW/cm² Energy: 18 J/cm² Duration: 10 min
M3
Anti-Aging 660nm Red + 850nm NIR

The collagen mode. Red stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. NIR penetrates deeper to improve firmness, plumpness and skin density. The combination addresses both surface wrinkles and the deeper structural loss that causes skin to sag over time.

Use for: fine lines · wrinkles · skin firmness · loss of elasticity · under-eye area
Irradiance: 30 mW/cm² Energy: 18 J/cm² Duration: 10 min
M4
Morning Skincare 590nm Yellow + 660nm Red + 850nm NIR

All three visible wavelengths at the highest irradiance in the mask. Activates circulation, drains overnight puffiness, boosts cellular energy for a visible instant glow. Your morning ritual mode — not a treatment session but a daily activation. Skin looks awake and luminous immediately after.

Use for: morning routine · instant glow · tired or puffy skin · daily maintenance
Irradiance: 45 mW/cm² Energy: 27 J/cm² Duration: 10 min
M5
Anti-Acne 415nm Blue only

Blue light at 415nm destroys C. acnes bacteria by activating porphyrins — a clinically validated mechanism. Targets active breakouts, reduces congestion and oiliness without antibiotics or harsh actives. Always follow M5 with M1 (red light) in the same or next session to counter any potential irritation.

Use for: active acne · oily and congested skin · inflamed breakouts
Irradiance: 23 mW/cm² Energy: 13.8 J/cm² Duration: 10 min
M6
Bedtime Skincare Yellow (3 min) → Red + NIR (5 min) → Blue (2 min)

The full-cycle overnight preparation mode. Cycles through all four wavelengths in sequence — brightening, then repairing, then purifying. Designed to set the skin up for overnight regeneration. The longest session in the mask.

Use for: end-of-day ritual · multiple concerns at once · night recovery
Irradiance: Variable Duration: 10 min total

What to use — matched to your skin concern

You do not need to use every mode. Pick the 1–2 that match your primary concern and be consistent. Results in LED therapy are cumulative — showing up 3–5 times per week matters more than which mode you use.

What to Expect

An honest results timeline

LED therapy works cumulatively. A single session is like a single gym session — real, but not transformative alone. Consistency over 4–12 weeks is where the results you will actually notice come from.

First sessions

Skin feels different before it looks different

After the first few sessions, most users notice their skin feels calmer, more hydrated and less reactive. This is real — the anti-inflammatory response begins immediately. Visible change takes longer.

Week 2–3

Glow — overall brightness and tone improve

The lymphatic drainage effect of 590nm and the circulation boost of 660nm produce a visible luminosity improvement. Skin looks brighter and more awake. Individual spots have not yet faded, but the overall tone evens out.

Week 4–6

Texture, spots and redness visibly improve

Surface dark spots begin to fade. Redness from rosacea or acne is calmer. Pores look tighter. Skin texture smooths. This is the checkpoint most users take their "after" photo — and where the results become undeniable.

Week 8–12

Collagen — structural change becomes visible

Rebuilding collagen is a biological process that takes time. Clinical studies show meaningful improvement in fine lines, skin density and firmness at 8–12 weeks of consistent use. This is where M3 earns its keep.

GCC & UAE Skin

Important rules for darker skin tones

The Lumnae mask is safe for all Fitzpatrick types — but certain modes require specific rules for Fitzpatrick III–VI skin (the majority in the UAE and GCC). Understanding these rules prevents the most common mistakes.

Mode-specific guidance for darker skin
M2 (590nm Yellow) — fully safe, highly recommended. Yellow light inhibits melanin production and is specifically indicated for hyperpigmentation in darker skin. Always Level 1 to start. Never Level 3 for pigmentation goals.
M1, M3, M4 (Red + NIR) — fully safe for all skin tones. No melanogenesis risk. Use as directed.
M5 (415nm Blue) — use carefully on Fitzpatrick III–VI. Blue light can activate the OPN3 melanogenesis pathway in darker skin tones. Always Level 1 only. Always follow with M1 (red light) in the same session. Never use M5 on the same day as M2. If pigmentation is your primary concern, consider skipping M5 entirely.
Year-round UV in the UAE

Dubai's UV index reaches 11–12 in peak months and stays elevated year-round — unlike temperate climates where skin gets a natural winter break. This means SPF 50+ every single morning is not optional when using the Lumnae mask for pigmentation or anti-aging goals. Without consistent sun protection, UV exposure generates new pigmentation faster than the LED can clear it.

Questions

Frequently asked

3–5 sessions per week is the recommended frequency. One rest day per week allows the cellular processes triggered by the light to complete. You can use it daily — but consistency over weeks matters more than daily use. Start at 3×/week and increase if your skin responds well.
Cleanse before your session — no products on skin during the session. Apply your serum immediately after (absorption is enhanced post-LED). For pigmentation: niacinamide or vitamin C serum. For anti-aging: peptide serum or hyaluronic acid. For acne: lightweight non-comedogenic serum. Retinol: use on non-LED evenings, not the same session.
Yes — you can use two modes in the same session or on the same day. The most common combination is M5 (Anti-Acne) followed immediately by M1 (Repairing) in the same session — blue light first, then red light to calm any potential irritation. M2 and M3 on alternate evenings is a popular multi-concern approach. The one rule to follow: never use M5 (blue) and M2 (yellow) on the same day, especially on darker skin tones.
Always start at Level 1 (50%). This applies to all modes and all skin types — even if your skin feels robust. Move to Level 2 from week 3 if there is no reaction. Level 3 is not recommended for pigmentation treatment or rosacea-prone skin at any stage. For sensitive skin, stay at Level 1 indefinitely — it still works.
Irradiance (mW/cm²) is the intensity of light reaching your skin at a given moment. Energy output (J/cm²) is the total dose delivered over the full session — irradiance × time. Both matter: a high-irradiance device used for too long can overdose; a low-irradiance device needs much longer to be effective. The Lumnae mask delivers 22–45 mW/cm² depending on mode, producing 13–27 J/cm² per session — within the clinically evidenced therapeutic range for collagen, pigmentation and acne. Red light therapy is widely used in clinical settings to support post-procedure recovery. However, every aesthetic procedure is different — and we always recommend consulting your aesthetic professional or doctor before resuming any skincare device after a treatment. They know your specific procedure and skin, and are best placed to advise on timing. As a general guideline shared by many practitioners, a rest period is commonly suggested — but please verify this with your practitioner directly.
M4 Morning Skincare operates at the highest irradiance in the mask (45 mW/cm²) and combines all three wavelengths — the combined light output creates a gentle warmth sensation. This is normal and not harmful. If it feels uncomfortable, switch to Pulse Mode — this intermittently cycles the light output to reduce the warmth sensation while maintaining therapeutic benefit. Or simply move to Level 1.
The key advantage of a home mask is consistency: 3–5 sessions per week at zero per-session cost, versus typically monthly clinic visits. Consistent lower-dose home use often produces strong outcomes over time. Many users combine both approaches — clinic sessions every 6–8 weeks, home mask in between. That said, if you have a specific skin condition or are under the care of a dermatologist, always discuss your home device routine with your practitioner.
